In the summer of 1965, 17-year-old Bill Carlson wasn’t much of a Beatles fan.

“I was a geek,” he said with a laugh. “A ’60s geek who loved jazz and classical and photography, a combination that assures you of never getting a date.”

But when press credentials for the Beatles’ upcoming local concert at the Metropolitan Stadium arrived at the Merle Morris Studios where Carlson worked as a part-time photographer, he took the assignment, largely because no one else wanted it.

“For me, it was just another thing to photograph,” Carlson said.

Forty-plus years later, Carlson has revisited the images he captured on Aug. 21, 1965, and collected 140 of them in “The Beatles: A One-Night Stand in the Heartland” (Cumberland House, .95), a scrapbook of that day that also includes interviews with folks who interacted with the Beatles, press clippings from the daily papers and anecdotes from a handful of the tens of thousands of fans who descended on the stadium to scream along with what would become one of, if not the, greatest rock bands of all time. And, oh, how those kids screamed.

“It was total chaos,” said Larry Kane, a veteran Philadelphia journalist who traveled with the Beatles on the 62-stop concert tour in 1964 and 1965. “(At that time), women in America were not supposed to express their emotions in public. And this was a totally open outpouring that was, like, ‘I can’t take it anymore! I love you!’ Each and every one of them thought the Beatles

were singing directly to them. After each show, they’d have to clean up all the sweat, tears, handkerchiefs and tissues. It was craziness.”

Carlson captured the entire experience, from the fans awaiting the band’s arrival at the airport to the madness of the actual performance. The bulk of the book’s photos, however, document the local press conference.

“They were so freaked out about having a riot, they overcontrolled the concert,” Carlson said. “Security was really tight, and no one was

allowed on the field but the band. But the press conference was a lot more loose and fun. The Beatles came into a very hostile environment, but they stepped up to the plate and were wonderful, vibrant and funny.”

For a sense of the level of hostility, one needs only to read the press reports included in the book. The Pioneer Press called the band “strange citizens from another world” and “alleged musicians.”

The Minneapolis Tribune, meanwhile, published a lurid story about young women attempting to break into the Beatles’ hotel rooms that included the revelation that at least one was a welcome guest of Paul McCartney: “Acting on information that McCartney had a girl in his room, (police) demanded entrance … (and told McCartney) he

would be jailed unless the girl was out of the room within two minutes.” (Luckily for all, the “young blonde” emerged with proof she was 21 years old, and no one was arrested.)

Kane was warned of the mayhem before joining the tour: “My father pulled me aside and said, ‘Watch your back. They’re a menace to society.’ ”

One of Carlson’s favorite shots from that day shows a police officer glaring at the band as if they were escaped convicts. But after that press conference, Carlson said, the Fab Four managed to turn a few opinions.

“They had such a relaxed attitude, the way they answered stupid questions about their hair,” Carlson said. “They did a fabulous job of diffusing some of that anger. I think that by the end of the press conference, everyone really liked them.”

And it’s those very images of the Beatles charming crusty old reporters that Kane said makes the book so special.

“I was stunned when I first saw Bill’s collection in 2002,” said Kane, who wrote the book’s foreword. “He really captured the essence of those four guys. In truth, I don’t think I’ve seen as good pictures of the Beatles anywhere. There’s plenty of photos from the showbiz angle, but he captured them as real people. For a 17-year-old to have that kind of perception is amazing.”

Still, Carlson ended up filing away his negatives for decades: “They were an afterthought.”

He went on to establish himself as a noted photographer and cinematographer with a four-decade career that includes work for CNN, PBS and National Geographic as well as a recent feature film, “Hiding Victoria.” He now lives in Spring Park and maintains a studio in Minneapolis.

“My career was not the Beatles; this was one day,” Carlson said. “That these photos are delightful to people is delightful to me. It’s been a ball.”

“With The Beatles” may be the least known and least talked about of all Beatles albums (if it’s not Beatles For Sale.) It was their second album released, after Please Please Me, so it doesn’t have the distinction of being their first album. It also doesn’t have the distinction of being their first truly formed great album (which was their 3rd album A Hard Day’s Night.) But that’s not to say it’s not a good album, it does contain some great Beatles classic.

It was ranked #420 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the greatest 500 albums of all time released in 2003. The album was released in the UK in 1963 but was not officially released in the United States until 1987 as the early Beatles albums in the US were cut & paste jobs. It wasn’t until Revolver that same album was released in the States as was released in the UK.

The album starts off “It Won’t Be Long” which while it doesn’t rank among The Beatles greatest songs is an enjoyable early pop song.

The second song is “All I’ve Got To Do” which has a nice bluesy sound to it, particularly on the title refrain. Among The Beatles more forgotten early songs, it’s a keeper.

The third song is easily the most well known song on the album, “All My Loving.” It was the opening song for The Beatles first performance on the Ed Sullivan performance.

The fourth song is “Don’t Bother Me” which was George Harrison’s songwriting debut.

The fifth song is “Little Child.” The first five tracks were all Beatles originals.

The sixth song is “Till There Was You” which is a cover. It’s a very soft song which features Paul McCartney in “music hall” mode.

Next is “Please Mr. Postman” which is another cover. It was the first Motown song to reach #1 when it hit the top spot for The Marvelettes in late 1961.

The eighth song (and the first of the second side of the album) is the Chuck Berry classic “Roll Over Beethoven.” It was a hit for Berry in 1956 and was ranked as one of the top 100 songs of all time by Rolling Stone. The song features George Harrison as both the lead singer and of course as the lead guitarist doing his best Chuck Berry impersonation.

The ninth song is “Hold Me Tight” which is a Beatles original breaking the streak of 3 straight covers. The song was originally recorded for Please Please Me but was left off. It was re-recorded for With The Beatles.

The 10th song is “You Really Got a Hold on Me” which was a cover by Smokey Robinson. It was a 1962 hit single by The Miracles (featuring Robinson) and it’s another Motown song.

The 11th song is “I Wanna Be Your Man” which written by Lennon & McCartney for their friends The Rolling Stones. The Stones version was released first. The Beatles version features Ringo Starr on lead vocals.

The 12th song is “Devil in Her Heart” which is a cover sung by George Harrison.

The 13th song is “Not a Second Time” which is the final Beatles original on the album. It was written and sung by John Lennon (of course it was credited to Lennon/McCartney as all songs by Lennon and/or McCartney were.)

The 14th and final song is “Money,” another cover of a song by a black artist (the 5th on the album.) It was a 1959 hit single for Barrett Strong.

While With The Beatles is certainly not one of The Beatles greatest albums, it is a rewarding listen if you are interested in their earlier material.

I haven’t read all the books about The Beatles but being the big Beatles fan that I am, I have read many of them. I’ve read books that are primarily about their biography and books that are primarily about their music. I’ve read books about The Beatles that are really great and I’ve read some that are not so great. In this article I focus on the good ones that I do recommend reading.

Revolution In The Head – Of all the books about The Beatles, this is a book that I have a “love/hate” relationship with. I strongly disagree with many of the opinions shared in this book but I still find it to be a really good read. One that makes me want to listen to The Beatles songs over again to hear things from this author’s perspective. It takes a close look at each of the songs The Beatles recorded during the 1960s (originals and covers.) Although it contains many opinions, it also contains a lot of facts that make it a good resource.

The Beatles As Musicians - This is actually a two book set that is sold separately. One edition covers all of the music The Beatles recorded from their beginnings up through the 1965  Rubber Soul album, while the other edition covers their music from the 1966 Revolver album through the untimely break up of the band in 1970. This book is really aimed at students of The Beatles music. It largely bypasses the biographical stuff (which is fine, because so many other books cover that stuff) and instead focuses in great detail on the musical construction of their songs. This book is probably over the head of many readers because of it’s focus on music theory. But for those really interested in the musicianship and songwriting of the band, there is no better resource.

Lennon Revealed – This is a “revealing” biography of John Lennon (hence the name!) I have read a few books on Lennon and I think this is the best of them. It does a good job of making you feel like you’re getting to know the real John Lennon rather than just the “icon.”

Many Years From Now – Tells The Beatles story from Paul McCartney’s perspective. Includes many direct quotes from Paul. This is an extremely informative book.

Here, There, & Everywhere: My Life Recording The Beatles – This book was written by Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick and tells The Beatles story from his very interesting perspective. I don’t think any other book had me feeling like I was really there for the recording of their albums as much as this one. It includes some interesting technical details on how the music was recorded. I very highly recommend this book!

The Beatles Anthology - The “official Beatles story.” I think this is an obvious “must have” for any Beatles fan. It’s the perfect companion to the Anthology documentary film (which is available on DVD of course.)

The Beatles Complete Scores – The music (including guitar & drum tabs) for every song the band officially released during their active career (ie: no Anthology songs are included.)

When four Liverpudlian lads formed a band in the 60s, the history of music changed forever. Quickly gaining in popularity, the band had its first recording session at the now iconic Abbey Road Studios in London and the album went on to enjoy a number one spot in the British chart. It was a sign of things to come, and the band topped charts consistently over the following decade. The studio was later immortalised in the album Abbey Road. This London sight is another ideal destination for anyone hoping to chart the UK history of The Beatles for themselves.

By booking hotels in Liverpool and London and setting out with some Beatles literature, retracing the story of the Beatles can be an amazing experience for any fan of the fab four.
